A series of severe rain storms early in 2015 wreaked havoc in many parts of Malawi as many homes were destroyed and growing crops devastated.
Many of those affected will rebuild their simple homes using locally available resources – mud bricks, mud for mortar, and in some cases, plastic sheeting covered with grass for a roof. In truth, many of the homes which collapsed did so because they were so poorly constructed in the first place.
For many people, particularly the elderly, to rebuild or repair is difficult or impossible even using local materials, especially if they don’t have a strong family network to help them.
It has been our privilege to help a few such individuals by constructing a small (typically 6m x 5m – 18ft x 15ft), but much more robust dwelling using burnt bricks, cement for the foundation and mortar, and a corrugated roof. We trust that these simple homes will be a blessing to those who benefit from them. What a joy to remember that our Lord Jesus Christ has prepared an eternal home in heaven for all who trust in Him!
